Expert System has just joined AFCEA –Armed Forces Communications and Electronic Associations, Rome - an international association that aims to promote “active communication between the government, the military, the media, and other types of industry associated with the world of (tele)informatics.”
Phase 2: acquisition
Depending upon the situation, the gathering of data (ACQUISITION) can be carried out in various ways.
- HUMINT (HUMan INTelligence): the acquisition of strategic data is carried out by human resources with the goal of collecting news through interpersonal relations (agents and informers), or direct observation (observers).
- IMINT (IMagery INTelligence): gathering and analysis of aerial or satellite images.
- MASINT (MeAsurement and Signature INTelligence): acquisition of invisible images with electrical sensors or radar.
- COMINT (COMmunication INTelligence): interception, selection and interpretation of the contents related to telecommunication traffic (mostly traffic through satellites and international cables).
- ELINT (ELectronic INTelligence): reception and analysis of electronic signals, as for example radar systems emissions.
- SIGINT (SIGnal INTelligence): gathering of data through communication interception (for example radio, mail, telephone, etc.).
- OSINT (Open Source INTelligence): acquisition and analysis of the contents available on open sources (press, internet, public databases, etc.).
The advantages of semantic technology
Regardless of the different acquisition modes, the Cogito Intelligence Platform, which employs the Cogito Crawler tool, can be integrated easily with other applications: it includes functions and plug-ins able to normalize the information streams (voice, fax, http, etc.), can process all the most widely used formats, and is easily interfaced with other acquisition systems.
The phases of the intelligence process

- Phase 2: acquisition
- Phase 3: selection
- Phase 4: ranking
- Phase 5: exploitation
- Phase 6: evaluation
- Phase 7: validation
- Phase 8: dissemination
